Li's Prescription No.5 is a pure Chinese medicinal prescription which has been steadily improved and gradually perfected by Professor Li Zizhong, the famous Chinese medical expert on encephalopathy, during dozens years of medical research and clinical treatment of encephalopathy and has proved to be specific for various diseases that affect the functioning of the brain. According to therapeutic statistics of several ten thousands patients, the prescription has a total effective rate of 93% and a notable effective rate of 66% in treating mental retardation, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, feeblemindedness and hydrocephalus caused by the developmental retardation of central nervous system due to various factors; encephalatrophy, senile dementia and Parkinson's disease caused by the nerve retrograde affection in the middle and old age; encephalopathy caused by heredity or gene mutation and chromosome abnormalities; and various disturbances of intelligence, speech and motor function caused by infection, poisoning, anoxia, cerebrovascular disease and craniocerebral trauma. Many patients with cerebral palsy have stood up and go on foot, many children with mental retardation have gone to school with their schoolbags, many vegetables have regained their consciousness, patients with chromosomal aberration have improved their life quality and social functions, and many patients with senile encephalopathy have restored their abilities to take care of or provide for themselves and their consciousness. What is the mechanism of action for a traditional Chinese medicinal prescription which is so highly effective in treating various diseases that affect the functioning of the brain? To make it clear, we entrusted pharmacologists of Lanzhou Medical University, China Pharmaceutical University and Guangzhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Materia Medica with the execution of a basic pharmacological research project. The results of Lanzhou Medical University have shown that Li's Prescription No.5 is permeable to the blood-brain barrier, raises the level of ribonucleic acid (memory molecule ) in the brain, promotes the synthesis of brain protein, enhances the function of dopaminergic neurons, regulates the release of such brain hormones as growth hormone, eliminates the harmful free radicals, decreases blood viscosity and improves microcirculation of the brain. Findings of Professor Liu Guoqing, neuropharmacologist of China Pharmaceutical University, and Professor Li Rui, neuropharmacologist of Guangzhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Materia Medicia, who used in vitro cultivation of nerve cells showed that Li's Prescription No.5 has a 93% protection rate of anoxic and ischemic damage of nerve cells and a 63.9% proliferation rate of central nerve cells. Both human clinical trials and animal experiments have shown that the prescription has notable effects of resisting anoxia and improving memory and intelligence. In April 1998, the project "A Clinical Study of Treatment of Cerebral Palsy and Feeblemindedness with Li's Prescription No.5 and its Application" passed the technical evaluation organized jointly by the Science and Technology Commission of Guangdong Province and the Department of Public Health of Guangdong Province.
Mechanism of Action
Li's Prescription No.5 contains multiple free amino acids and micromolecular peptides, which are the nutrients necessary for maintaining the physiological functions of the human body. It permeates blood-brain barrier, enters into the brain cells and activates the membrane receptors, promotes the function of nerve cells, improves the transport function of neuronal membrane, accelerates the entry of nutrients and changes the potential gradient inside and outside the nerve cell membrane, normalizes the transport of glucose, promotes the synthesis of brain protein, strengthens the anti-anoxic and anti-ischemic abilities; at the same time, it raises the level of neurotransmitters, peptide hormones and precursors of coenzymes, activates adenylate cyclase and catalyzes the release of other hormones, regenerates the residual neurons, revives the nerve cells under dormancy and makes them sensitive to external stimulus; increases the oxygen supply, improves the activity of nerve cells and promotes the repair of the damaged nerve cells, speeds up the synthesis of nerve cell growth factor so as to accelerate the development and proliferation of the brain cells, regulates the metabolism of brain cells, and improves the anti-anoxic ability of brain cells, thus enhancing memory and improving intelligence and disturbance in speech and motor function of limbs.
★Infantile cerebral palsy, feeblemindedness and dementia, whether they are caused by congenital heredity, developmental retardation in uterus, perinatal injury or injury after birth, all lead to developmental retardation of central nervous system, restricted increase in amount of nerve cells of central nervous system, hypofunction of cellular metabolism and the resultant various hypofunctions or disorders of the brain. Li's Prescription No.5 which contains essential substances needed by metabolism of brain cells can direct, under the action of guiding drug of traditional Chinese medicine, other drugs to act on the brain to enhance the function of cellular metabolism and to promote the development and proliferation of brain cells, thus attaining the goal of treating infantile cerebral palsy, feeblemindedness and dementia.
★ Infection, poisoning, anoxia, trauma, cerebral infarction, and cerebral hemorrhage of central nervous system all can result in brain tissue injury, namely, injury of brain cells, manifested as disturbances of consciousness, memory, thinking, speech, seeing and hearing, and motor function in varying degrees. Li's Prescription No.5 is easy to permeate blood-brain barrier, increases the levels of amino acids, phospholipids, ribonucleic acid, protein and neurotransmitters (such as acetycholine and dopamine) in the brain, regulates microcirculation of the brain, increases oxygen supply, activates the nerve cells under dormancy, and promotes repair of damaged nerve cells and regeneration of nerve cells. It eliminates harmful substances (free radicals, lipofuscin, etc.) in the brain and restores the transport function of the neuronal membrane, thus regulating nerve pathway and nerve conduction and nonspecifically promoting restoration of cerebral functions. In short, it increases the number of brain cells, improves the function of brain cells and makes various encephalic diseases including vegetable state gradually recover.
★ Senile dementia, encephalatrophy and Parkinson's disease are retrograde affections of central nervous system, that is, metabolic disturbance of brain cells. The human brain has about 1 500 hundred million cells; of these, only about 1%-1.5% of the cells (about 15-20 hundred million cells) participate in functional activities of cranial nerves. The amount of kinetocytes in the brain of everybody determines his intelligence, thinking and memory. At the age of 25 years or so brain cell apoptosis begins, at the age of 35-45 years about 50 thousand brain cells undergo apoptosis everyday but additional 50 thousand brain cells replace the losses everyday, in climacteric period the cell apoptosis increases gradually and the additional cells decrease gradually. With rapid retrograde affection of central nervous system, excessive cell apoptosis, few additional cells and less than 15 hundred million cells participating in functional activities of the brain, hypomnesis will follow; with less than 12 hundred million brain cells, retardation of thought and decline in judgement, reasoning and working ability will follow; with still less cells participating in functional activities of the brain, such behavior disorders as personality defect will develop, and this is senile dementia. If the decrease in cell amount occurs mainly in globus pallidus, striate body, red nucleus and black substance, such extrapyramidal symptoms as shaking palsy, which is known as Parkinson's disease in medicine, will develop. These serial diseases all belong to the category of metabolic disturbance of brain cells. Li's Prescription No.5 both improves functions of residual neurons, inhibits cell apoptosis and activates brain cells to make them proliferate. Therefore, Li's Prescription No.5 has a certain therapeutic effect on retrograde affections of central nervous system such as senile dementia.
★ Headache, dizziness, insomnia, dreamfulness, anxiety, restlessness, amnesia, lassitude and decline in working and learning capacity due to intense, busy and tiring work and learning and to injuries caused by the seven human emotions are, for the most part, the result of disorder of immunologic function of cerebral functional nerves. Li's Prescription No.5 can significantly enhance immunologic function of the organism, bidirectionally regulate nerve pathway and nerve conduction and nonspecifically promote restoration of cerebral function, thus improving the above symptoms and working and learning capacities.
Clinical Application
In view of the fact that Li's Prescription No.5 has the effects of promoting cell development, repairing cell injury, inhibiting cell apoptosis, increasing cell quantity and improving cell metabolism, it is applicable to the following conditions:
● Mental retardation and feeblemindedness caused by developmental retardation of central nervous system, and dysfunction of consciousness, intelligence, motor, speech, seeing and hearing due to brain injury caused by various factors
● Various clinical symptoms of epilepsy, hydrocephalus and psychonosema
● Senile dementia and Parkinson's disease due to retrograde affection of central nervous system
● Various encephalic diseases caused by hereditary metabolic disease and chromosome abnormalities
Diseases of central nervous system, whether the focus is in cerebral cortex, basal ganglion, brain stem or in cerebellum, whether the pathologic change is trauma, vascular disease, inflammation, degenerative disease or congenital disease, and whether the course of disease is long or short, can all be treated with Li's Prescription No.5.
